Carport or garage between two containers

ExperimentalUpdated: 2026-10-19

How it works

You enter the container size (20 or 40 ft), condition and the gap between them. Trusses or rafters rest on brackets clamped to the container top rails — every 600 mm on both sides. The system works out the containers, corner pads, anchors, brackets, trusses, gutters, end cladding and the gate. The covering is profiled steel sheet on purlins, PVC tent fabric on the trusses, or a torch-on membrane on OSB decking. The minimum pitch follows the manufacturer: 9° for steel sheet, about 1.4° for torch-on.

Tent arch

Factory tent roofs for containers are sold by span (6, 8, 10, 12 m) and length (6 or 12 m). They are rated for only 0.28–0.65 kPa of snow, while the roof load in Lithuania is about 1 kN/m² or more. So snow will have to be cleared, and the maker or a structural engineer checks the kit.

Garage with a gate

The front can be clad with steel sheet and fitted with a sectional gate on timber posts. The gate must fit between the posts and below the container top, where the roof rests. The room needed above the opening for tracks is set by the gate maker.

Is it a building

- A single container on blocks with no utilities may be a movable item. Containers joined by a shared roof are treated as one building, and the area counts both containers.

- Up to 50 m² and 5 m high is Group I, up to 80 m² and 8.5 m is Group II.

- A gap over 6 m means it is not a simple structure (STR 1.01.03 item 31), so a permit is needed.

- Closer than 1 m to the boundary, or 1–3 m from it when the structure is taller than the distance, needs the neighbour's consent.

- No bracket capacity was found — a structural engineer must check the trusses, brackets and snow drifts on the container roofs.
