Sliding gates
A cantilever gate rolls on two carriages fixed in a footing next to the opening, so there is no track in the opening. The frame is about 1.5 times the opening: a counterweight extends beyond it. This is market practice, not a norm.
The system is chosen by gate mass and opening width: a 70×70 beam for lighter gates, 80×80 for heavier ones. If the gate exceeds the known systems, the generator warns and suggests choosing the system with the manufacturer.
Swing gates and wickets
A double swing gate has two leaves on posts, each with two adjustable hinges and a drop bolt, plus a rubber centre stop. A single swing gate has one leaf. A 1 m pedestrian wicket can stand alone or next to the gate.
Posts are chosen by size: 80×80 up to 1.5 m high and 4 m wide, 100×100 for larger gates. They are embedded about 0.9 m and concreted.
Infill, finish and automation
- Infill: 3D mesh panel, 20×20 bars, steel pickets, profiled sheet, timber boards or frame only.
- Finish: hot-dip galvanising or powder coating — the amount is calculated from the steel mass.
- Automation: an operator and gear rack for sliding gates, two arms for swing gates.
Regulations and permits
- Fences and other barriers up to 2 m high are group I, higher ones group II; in a city group II needs a permit (STR 1.01.03:2017). Gates are not named separately in the law, so they are treated as part of a barrier — an interpretation.
- Building on the plot boundary or closer than 1 m to it may need the neighbour's consent (STR 1.05.01:2017 Annex 7).
- Automatic entrance gates must have manual operation (General Fire Safety Rules, item 17).
